NEWS: NIAB EMR's Gloria Endredi wins BASIS award
Congratulations to NIAB EMR’s Gloria Endredi, who is the 2016 recipient of the Paul Singleton Project of the Year Award for her BASIS project on the improvement of spray deposition on table grapes. Gloria was presented with her award at the 2016 Cereals Event on 15 June.

NEWS: New business development manager and regional agronomist appointments at NIAB
UK crop research organisation NIAB has appointed Steven Tompkins in a new role of Business Development Manager and Emily Borton as a trainee regional agronomist for the south of England, effective immediately.
Steven will be responsible for securing new commercial and research funding, promoting the organisation’s role as a leading provider of innovative agricultural research and technical services in the UK.

A collaboration between leading scientists in the UK and India will focus on tackling global food shortages with research into increasing crop yields and improving disease and drought resistance.
This collaboration will create opportunities for leading experts in the UK and India to come together to tackle global challenges in the areas of food security, crop science and biotechnology.
NEWS: Good spring conditions key to optimising wheat nitrogen inputs
Increasing nitrogen rates at GS32 to sustain high yields could be cost effective if spring conditions remain good (provided that NVZ limits permit). This is still applicable, even with current low commodity prices, but the decision needs to be science-based advises NIAB TAG.
Independent multi-site, multi-year NIAB TAG trials show an overall economic response of up to £200/ha to an extra 60 kg N/ha at GS32. However, there were site and season exceptions.

AHDB NEWS: New yellow rust race detected
‘Kranich’ yellow rust race detected in the UK for the first time
The ‘Kranich’ yellow rust race has been detected in the UK for the first time and winter wheat growers are being advised to inspect varieties closely as part of a UK-wide monitoring effort.
The UK Cereal Pathogen Virulence Survey (UKCPVS) identified the new ‘Kranich’ race from an isolate collected in 2014 and tested in the field in 2015.
