Seed bulking is carried out across NIAB, at both Cambridge and East Malling sites, for the multiplication and maintenance of plant populations, as well as for breeding and variety development.
Our facilities are well equipped to handle the requirements of a wide variety of crop species, including temperature and humidity controls, control of light spectrum, photoperiod and irrigation all controlled by our central Priva System.
Examples of the crops regularly handled:
- Barley
- Cowpea
- Legumes
- Lentils
- Maize
- Rice
- Soy
- Wheat
Each crop is individually managed to its certain requirements. NIAB is experienced in handling the sowing, growing and harvesting of a variety of genus. Depending on the crop and project protocol, we can start the seed germination process in growth rooms/lab space or directly sow under glass.
Seed can be threshed and clean on site, or mature plants can be collected.
NIAB operates an integrated pest and disease management programme across the glasshouse complexes, which we combine with best practice procedures to reduce P&D pressures.
We can work with multiple lines, by either separating into different glasshouse compartments or bagging inflorescences if required.
The facilities are available to provide this service for GM and Non-GM material.
All work is strictly confidential.
