NIAB welcomes visitors back to the 2024 Diverse Weeds Open Day, sponsored by Nufarm, with a demonstration of the research work into sustainable management of broad-leaved weeds undertaken by NIAB.
We will present a further update of how cultural and chemical practices can affect the density and species of broad-leaved weeds, including:
- cultural control methods - an update to how cultivation and drilling date drives the population dynamics of broad-leaved weeds;
- alternative control methods - looking to the future of weed management, there will be an opportunity to discover how mechanical control can be combined with innovative uses of herbicides to control broad-leaved weeds;
- timing of spring herbicides - an opportunity to see the importance of application efficacy to maximise the effectiveness of herbicides;
- herbicide choices - at a site with such diversity in the weed spectrum is the perfect opportunity to discuss which products are most suitable when faced with certain species.
John Cussans (Weed Management Specialist, NIAB), Jasper Kanomanyanga (PhD student in weed management) and Joseph Martlew (Research Agronomist, NIAB) will lead tours of the site and will be available to discuss weed management strategies.
