Established in 1899, Saxmundham is one of the UK’s oldest agricultural experimental sites. Now supported by The Morley Agricultural Foundation, the site offers a unique opportunity to explore original plots—many with treatments unchanged for over a century. Discover how this long-running experiment has adapted to address today’s soiland phosphorus management challenges, and hear about Niab’s wider research into long-term soils and farming systems.
Programme
The event features a single start time, with visitors split into groups with tour guides, circulating around the demos.
- Dr David Clarke – explore the site's long-term history, key findings, and how it’s adapting to test novel phosphorus management strategies.
- Dr Nathan Morris – insights from other long-term trials supported by The Morley Agricultural Foundation, highlighting 40+ years of research.
- Dr Stephanie Swarbreck – an update on a TMAF supported project using Saxmundham’s legacy plots to explore how variety choice and genetics can improve nutrient use efficiency in low input systems.
- Dr Elizabeth Stockdale – an overview of Niab’s broader farming systems research.
