Whether it’s a tree in your garden or in a curated or nursery collection, we can help you identify the variety of your apple trees.
DNA analysis precisely compares your trees to those in the National Fruit Collections. Matched samples then provide a wealth of information on your variety’s history and cultivation. If the analysis is not found in the reference collections, the result provides a firm basis for research into lost or local varieties, or alternatively for the naming of known seedlings.
Niab is providing the DNA analysis for FruitID’s 2025 Scheme which offers you, whether grower or gardener the chance to identify a tree for just £45 (including VAT) per sample, regardless of quantity.
Identical apple varieties (synonyms) identified through DNA fingerprinting
The Scheme has been running for nine years and has chalked up an impressive list of rediscovered heritage varieties such as Barcelona Pearmain, which is being accessioned into the Brogdale Collection for the first time.
All you need to do is request a uniquely numbered sample bag(s) from fruitID, which you then use to send sample leaves to Niab.
But hurry! Bag requests have to be made by 3rd July 2025.
